Consent-to-travel letter for a minor travelling to Canada

Quick answer

A child travelling to Canada without both parents should carry their own passport, a copy of their birth certificate, and a consent letter signed by the parent or parents who are not travelling. The letter should include the parents' contact details and the name and contact details of the adult caring for the child in Canada.

Key facts

  • Child's own passport (a parent's passport is not enough)
  • Copy of the birth certificate
  • Signed consent letter, ideally in English or French
  • Custody papers if parents are separated, or a death certificate if a parent has died

Travelling alone

Carry the child's passport, a copy of the birth certificate and a letter signed by both parents or legal guardians, with their address and phone number and the contact details of the supervising adult in Canada.

Travelling with one parent

Bring a letter signed by the parent who is not travelling, with their contact details and a copy of their signed passport or national ID.

What to include in the letter

  • Child's full name, date of birth and passport number
  • Travel dates and flight details
  • Name, address and phone of the adult or custodian in Canada
  • Both parents' names, addresses, phone numbers and signatures

Summer camps and short visits

Border officers may look more closely at minors travelling without parents. Many camps also ask for a Canadian custodian. We offer short-stay custodianship for visits and camps.
